Maura Harvey is a bilingual poet, author, and artist who has lived in California since 1950.
She has been a teacher of Spanish for over thirty-five years and holds a PhD in Latin American
literature from UC Irvine.
Her poetry in both Spanish and English has appeared widely. In 1993 the bilingual collection,
Poemas, was published in Venezuela as well as San Dieguito Heritage, vignettes of local
San Diego history. Poems have appeared in anthologies including Tidepools, Into the Deep,
Magee Park Poets, and the California Quarterly of the California State Poetry Society.
Poems in Spanish and English garnered prizes from the Georgia State Poetry Society and
Mira Costa College.
Ms. Harvey has presented solo recitals and participated in readings in San Diego, Orange County,
Tijuana and Tecate, Mexico, and Venezuela. She is a founder of Taller del mar, a monthly poetry
workshop with members from Tijuana and San Diego. Taller del mar has published Páginas sueltas
and is preparing a second anthology, Llamado del mar.
Devotion to poetry has led her to serve on the editorial board of C.S.P.S. since 1999 and, more
recently, as secretary and annual contest chair. She has been a frequent editor of the California
Quarterly.
From 1990-1994 she served on the City Council of Encinitas and was Mayor of Encinitas in 1993.
Ms. Harvey hosted a weekly television talk show North County Alive and has spoken at numerous
public engagements. She maintains an art studio and produces individual pieces and
collaborates with graphic artists from around the world. She has studied painting and collage
in Aix-en-Provence and has shown her works in local venues such as the Japanese
Pavilion in Balboa Park and the Torrey Pines Association Art Show in Carmel Valley.
Because of our geography and history, we Californians have a unique position as multi-cultural
leaders on the world art scene. Maura Harvey has shown a lifelong commitment to the healing,
unifying power of the arts.
